Shakespeare Act IV and part of Act V + language execise

Today we start off by doing some work on "Romeo and

 Juliet."

In groups of 3/4 students answer the study questions

for Act IV.

Here they are:

 1. Why is Paris at Friar Laurence's cell?

2. What reason does Paris give the Friar for the hasty marriage?

3. How long will the sleeping potion take effect?

4. Where will Juliet be put after her family thinks she is dead?

5. Who will be waiting in the tomb when Juliet awakes?

6. Who is supervising the preparations for the wedding?

7. What change does Lord capulet make in the wedding plans?

8. If the potion does not work, what does Juliet plan to do?

9. What vision gives her the strength to go ahead and drink the potion?

10. How will Romeo be informed about the plans?

Character Study (pair work)
Although he is mentioned quite early on, we don't get to meet Paris before Act IV

We find out about a person, generally speaking, from three sources:
1. What they do (or don't do!)
2. What they say
3. What others say about them

Based on these criteria, what do you find out about the character of Paris? What is his role in the play?

Finally, about 9.10 we will start to read the Final Act of "Romeo and Juliet"- until page 130

And now for something completely different...... It's....

Watch a "howcast" or "Videojug" video to learn how to do something new.
What did you choose and why?

Shakespeare continued- Act III

Today we have our short lesson so we won't have time to do so much...

Most of you have now done your one page analysis of Act II and the beginning of Act III. This will be graded and go towards your final course grade.

The second graded assignment is 10 out of 25 questions about the play. Choose any 10 questions and answer them.

Here are the graded questions.

The final graded assignment will be a comparison of the play and the DiCaprio film version of "Romeo and Juliet".

That will be next Friday (week 6). We will need to start the lesson some minutes earlier and finish at ten.

Ok, back to today. If we have time one or two who missed their analyses can do that today. Otherwise the following exercise should be done:

Some questions about Act III Scene II

1. What does Juliet wrongly believe when she hears the nurse calling Romeo's name

2. What is Juliet's first reaction when she learns that Romeo has killed Tybalt?

3. Why does Juliet send the nurse back to Romeo?

Act III Scene III- V

The assignment today is to read the summary of the rest of

Act III and correct 11 errors. Miss Take has been up to her

work again.

Here is the text

Scene III takes place inside Friar Laurence's cell. Romeo went there to hide after the killing of Benvolio and Tybalt. Romeo does not know what punishment the Prince gave and the Friar explains
"Not body's death , but body's banishment"
Romeo is relieved about this. The nurse comes in and is kind to Romeo. When he inquires if Juliet hates him for killing her cousin, she replies that she is weeping and crying out both names.
Romeo grabs a sword and wants to cut out from his body the part from the name of Montague resides. It is now Friar Laurence tells of his plan. Romeo will visit Juliet as planned that night then leave for Rome until things have died down and the Friar has explained about the secret marriage and can get the families to reconcile and get Romeo pardoned. The nurse gives Romeo a letter from Juliet.
Scene IV
We are in the Capulet house where Paris wants an answer to his suit to marry Juliet. It is Monday night. Lord Capulet agrees to the plans and without consulting Juliet agrees that they will be married the same week on Friday. Lord Capulet goes off to tell Juliet the good news.
Scene V
Romeo and Juliet have spent the night together and now Romeo must leave because they hear the nightingale sing. Ironically Juliet has a vision that the next time they meet he will be dead in a tomb.Lady Capulet comes in and gives Juliet the news about the wedding. She makes an excuse for her appearance that she has cried over Tybalt's death. Her mother explains that someone will kill Romeo in Mantua with a dagger.
When Capulet comes in his wife explains that Juliet will not marry Paris and he gets angry with her and threatens to kick her out. Juliet asks her mother for help and she is very sympathetic. The scene finishes that Juliet will go to Friar Laurence to get help or take her life. Please mail me your answers

This Friday we will answer questions about Act IV, look at Act V together and listen to any analyses which still haven't been presented.

Planning and working

Today you are going to plan in small groups.

You need to consider the following questions?

How are we going to work? Summative or formative lessons?

How much and how should we use the text books?

What do I (as an individual) need to improve? Compare with the others in your group.

How can we improve our grammar skills?

It doesn't seem to be working with word lists but how can we improve our vocabulary?

Gold
I haven't had a chance to get the listening files up and running.
However, you can work on all the other skills.

Make sure you do a number of exercises.

They should be emailed together with the planning sduggestions to me by the end of the lesson.

Next week........Shakespeare analysis!
